COCOON sets out to redefine sustainable luxury in the bathroom industry. COCOON is more than just a brand—it is a company with a philosophy of timeless design, where impeccable craftsmanship meets a commitment to environmental responsibility. The goal of COCOON is to create products that embody effortless elegance, offering discerning customers a sanctuary of refined simplicity.

COCOON was developed on the principles of longevity, functionality, and aesthetic purity. From the very beginning, COCOON has stood as a symbol of sophisticated minimalism, redefining the way we experience everyday rituals.

What are the COCOON standards for sustainable luxury?

The Strength of 316L Stainless Steel: 100% Recyclable

COCOON’s ‘brushed Inox’ bathroom faucets are crafted from 316L stainless steel, a premium-grade material known for its durability, resistance to corrosion, and 100% recyclability. This high-performance alloy contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which can be easily recovered and reintegrated into the production process. By prioritizing recyclable materials, COCOON champions an economically viable and self-sustaining approach to manufacturing.

Eco-Friendly Products with Longevity

COCOON selects materials for their durability and environmental responsibility. Their taps, basins, and baths are designed for long life spans, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This eco-conscious approach not only minimizes waste but also ensures that COCOON’s products align with sustainable living principles. Additionally, their water-saving technologies help limit water consumption, contributing to a lower carbon footprint.

Low Environmental Impact Manufacturing

COCOON is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact through responsible manufacturing practices. By utilizing cold working methods for stainless steel and solid surface materials, they minimize energy-intensive production techniques. Their facilities are powered by certified clean energy, and water conservation and waste separation are key elements of their sustainability strategy. These efforts ensure that the brand remains at the forefront of eco-friendly innovation.

The Importance of Lead-Free Taps

COCOON’s commitment to health and safety is reflected in their 316L stainless steel taps, which are completely lead-free. Lead contamination in drinking water poses serious health risks, particularly in older plumbing systems. To meet the strict requirements of the California Health and Safety Code (AB 1953) and Vermont’s lead-free plumbing regulations, COCOON offers 100% stainless steel built-in valves for wall-mounted basins, ensuring safe and compliant water usage.

Understanding Key Certifications

COCOON has earned global recognition for its sustainable design and production. Their stainless steel tapware collection meets rigorous performance and safety standards, certified by the world’s leading authorities:

  • TÜV Certification – Guarantees quality and safety compliance for building materials and industrial products.
  • WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) – Ensures that plumbing products meet water supply safety and hygiene standards.
  • NSF-61 Certification – Verifies that products meet strict standards for safe drinking water.
  • ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 – Establishes performance and reliability criteria for plumbing fixtures.
  • CEC (California Energy Commission) Compliance – Ensures that COCOON’s products meet energy and water efficiency regulations.
  • WaterSense Certification – An EPA-backed program that promotes water-efficient plumbing fixtures without sacrificing performance.
  • UP-Code Certification – Recognized across the U.S., it ensures adherence to plumbing and building codes.
  • ISO (Green Label) Certification – Demonstrates compliance with environmental management and sustainable production standards.

When choosing a tub for your home, there are bathtub materials you should consider as part of your pros, cons, durability and maintenance list.

Bathtub Materials: UHS, Cristalplant & Concrete

These bathtub materials are highlighted, as they are the top performers from the product lines we sell from Inbani and COCOON.

Inbani tubs are manufacturered in solid surface material (white) or you can choose from more than 60 UHS Colors.

View all of Inbani’s UHS colors here >> materials

UHS Color (Ultra-High-Strength Color) refers to a specialized surface treatment or material blend used in manufacturing high-end bathroom fixtures like bathtubs and basins. It is designed to offer superior durability, color retention, and resistance to wear over time.

Why UHS Color Matters for Bathtub Materials:

  1. Enhanced Durability – UHS Color coatings are highly resistant to scratches, stains, and fading, ensuring a long-lasting pristine look. This is especially important for frequently used fixtures like bathtubs and basins.

  2. Deep & Uniform Color – Unlike standard surface coatings, UHS Color provides a richer, more consistent hue that does not fade or discolor over time, even with prolonged exposure to water, heat, and cleaning agents.

  3. Resistant to Chemicals & UV Exposure – This material prevents yellowing or discoloration caused by harsh cleaning products or natural light exposure, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor bathroom installations.

  4. Smooth, Non-Porous Surface – UHS Color coatings create a sleek, easy-to-clean surface that resists mold, mildew, and soap buildup, contributing to better hygiene and easier maintenance.

  5. Luxurious Matte or Glossy Finish – UHS Color technology allows for premium aesthetic choices, including velvety matte finishes or high-gloss options, giving designers and homeowners more flexibility in creating a refined bathroom look.

UHS  – Why It’s a Game Changer for Bathtubs

Using UHS Color ensures that a bathtub or basin remains visually stunning and structurally intact for years, even in high-humidity environments. It’s a perfect blend of form and function, making it a top choice for luxury and performance-driven bathroom designs.

The solid surface material that COCOON bathtubs uses is called Cristalplant.

Cristalplant is a high-end solid surface material commonly used in luxury bathroom fixtures, particularly bathtubs and basins. It is a composite material made from natural minerals (primarily aluminum trihydrate) and a small percentage of high-performance polyester and acrylic resins. This blend gives it a smooth, stone-like appearance while maintaining exceptional durability.

Cristalplant >> more info

Durability & Benefits of Cristalplant for Bathtubs:

  1. Extremely Durable & Repairable – Cristalplant is highly resistant to scratches, stains, and impact. Unlike ceramic or enameled materials, minor damage (such as small scratches or scuffs) can be repaired with sanding, restoring the original finish.

  2. Soft, Velvety Touch – It has a smooth, matte surface with a natural, stone-like texture that is warm to the touch, enhancing the overall bathing experience.

  3. Non-Porous & Hygienic – The material is non-porous, making it highly resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria. This ensures easy cleaning and long-term hygiene.

  4. UV & Chemical Resistant – Unlike some other solid surfaces, Cristalplant is resistant to UV exposure and harsh cleaning agents, preventing discoloration and yellowing over time.

  5. Seamless & Sculptural Design – Its moldable nature allows for seamless, modern designs with clean lines and organic shapes, making it a preferred choice for contemporary and minimalist bathrooms.

Is Cristalplant a Good Choice for Bathtub Materials?

Absolutely! Cristalplant bathtubs are highly durable, maintain their beauty for years, and provide a luxurious, spa-like feel. With its repairable surface, long-lasting color, and resistance to everyday wear, it’s an excellent investment for high-end bathroom designs.  See Care & Maintenance

COCOON’s concrete bathtubs are different from other brands.

Read: Handcrafted Concrete Bathtubs by COCOON

1. Proprietary Lightweight Concrete Blend

Unlike traditional concrete tubs, which are extremely heavy and can require reinforced flooring, COCOON uses a specially formulated concrete that is significantly lighter while maintaining durability. This makes installation easier and allows for more design flexibility in various bathroom layouts.

2. Strength & Durability

COCOON’s concrete is reinforced with advanced composites, making it stronger and less prone to cracking compared to standard concrete. Many traditional concrete tubs, if not properly treated, can develop small cracks over time due to natural expansion and contraction. COCOON’s proprietary mix reduces this risk, ensuring long-term durability.

3. Smooth, Natural Finish

One of COCOON’s signature features is the ultra-smooth, handcrafted finish of their concrete. While standard concrete tubs can feel rough or porous, COCOON’s material is treated to be soft to the touch and non-porous, enhancing the bathing experience and preventing issues like staining or water absorption.

4. Minimal Maintenance & Water Resistance

COCOON applies a high-performance sealant to their concrete tubs, making them more resistant to moisture, stains, and discoloration. Traditional concrete tubs often require regular sealing to prevent water absorption, but COCOON’s finish ensures long-lasting protection with minimal upkeep.

5. Eco-Friendly & Sustainable

Their lightweight concrete uses less raw material than traditional concrete, reducing environmental impact. Additionally, COCOON focuses on sustainability by creating long-lasting products that do not require frequent replacement or heavy maintenance.

Why Choose COCOON’s Concrete Tub?

COCOON’s lightweight concrete tubs offer the best of both worlds—the raw, organic beauty of concrete without the excessive weight and maintenance challenges of traditional concrete. Their handcrafted, highly durable finish makes them a luxurious yet practical choice for modern bathrooms.

Heated towel warmers are becoming a staple in modern bathrooms, offering both comfort and energy-efficient heating solutions. Newer models come with programmable settings, ensuring your towels are always ready when you need them.  Also becoming popular are heated robe warmers, which are placed vertically, so you can have a cozy bath robe after your shower.

Tim Derhaag, COCOON Designer Shares His Vision on Maison Collection

COCOON designer Tim Derhaag shares his insights into the design philosophy and concept behind the Maison tapware collection, explaining his focus on simplicity and essentiality for a line that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Can you tell us about your design philosophy and the concept behind the Maison tapware collection that you created for COCOON?

T.D.– I believe in creating designs that are minimal yet magical, where the focus is on the basics and universal appeal. With the Maison collection, I wanted to design something that was simple and essential, while still being recognizable and functional.

How did you come up with the concept for the Maison collection?

T.D.– The concept for the Maison collection came from my exploration of the essential elements of a tap. I wanted to create something that was universal, so I focused on the circle as the main shape. When something is placed on the circle, it becomes a lever, and when a line is added to the circle, it becomes a valve. This concept formed the basis for the design of the Maison collection.

What was the inspiration behind the design?

T.D.– I drew inspiration from a 1970’s family-owned stereo amplifier that I still keep in the back of my studio. Thus, the radial-brushed circular tap mixers in stainless steel evoke the stereo’s knobs.

How did you approach the design of the spout for the Maison collection?

T.D.– When designing the spout, I wanted to maintain the minimal and essential aesthetic of the collection. I explored both straight and round options. The radial brush finish was chosen to add visual interest and to align with the overall design philosophy of the collection, while reminiscing on vintage stereo knobs.

What is the significance of the name ‘Maison’ for the collection?

T.D.– The name Maison was chosen because it represents the house collection for COCOON. It signifies that the Maison collection is the foundation upon which other designs can be built. It is meant to be essential, sturdy, and well-designed, providing a tool for architects and homeowners to create their own unique spaces.

How does the Maison collection fit into your overall design philosophy?

T.D.–The Maison collection aligns perfectly with my design philosophy of creating designs that are simple, essential, and universal. It is a tool that supports the rest of the collection and allows individuals to project their own style and personality onto their spaces. It is about providing a well-designed foundation that enhances the lives of those who use it.

You may have heard claims that minimalism is dead, but this simply isn’t true. To make these claims is to misunderstand what minimalism is and its lasting effects.

Minimalism rose in popularity over the last few years. Followings of YouTubers, bloggers, and personalities such as Marie Kondo, The Minimalists, and Matt D’Avella skyrocketed as everyone clamored to figure out how to get rid of their stuff the right way.

But COVID-19 lockdowns have left some people in barren homes that they don’t love and yearning for more possessions. Many regret stripping their closets, kitchens, and art supplies now that the outside world is less accessible.

Does this mean minimalism is gone? No, of course not. Minimalism existed before you heard of it and it’ll live on, even if the mainstream focus shifts away from it.

COCOON Beverly Hills showcases new bath collection

As one of the most important trade shows in Los Angeles, WestEdge Design Fair brings together artists, designers, architects and collaborators in the industry. The three-day event offers the best in modern design, with product displays, panels and networking to discover what is new and relevant.

Taking place in the fall of 2023, WestEdge was held at the iconic Santa Monica Barker Hangar. As an exhibitor, we were proud to present plumbing fixtures by Piet Boon and John Pawson, alongside the free-standing tub, carved from a solid block of marble. The design elements of the display are true to COCOON’s brand of Scandinavian minimalism with earth tones and natural elements.

The Design Fair was also an introduction to the Maison Collection by COCOON, designed by Tim Derhaag. Derhaag is an award-winning product designer, creating concepts for interior design, including lighting collections, tables, storage modulars and more. He brings real-world expertise to his product concepts, as an interior designer for hotels and residential projects.

COCOON Uses High-Quality Concrete Technique: Flexible, Lightweight & Natural Material

COCOON of Beverly Hills, A Flagship Showroom

We are excited to announce a new collection from the COCOON Lab, presenting the Atlantis, free-standing tub and Bowl 1.1 sink in several concrete finishes. COCOON is a bath ware brand that focuses on quality, innovation, durability and sustainability. With a minimalist and modern aesthetic, COCOON features world renowned designers, Piet Boon and John Pawson for their collections of faucets, shower and bath sets, including basins, vanities and tubs.

Concrete Tub Material by COCOON:

  • Up to 80% lighter and more flexible than traditional concrete tubs
  • Little maintenance, as no wax or oil is needed to seal the tub after usage
  • Heat-resistant
  • Will not crack
  • Built to last a lifetime

According to the COCOON Lab Concrete Material Guide, their concrete finishes are made from a special, natural mixture and hand polished. Each tub has its own unique look, with a visual patina and variation in color.   >>Shop COCOON Tubs<<

Top Characteristics of a COCOON Concrete Tub and Sink:

Texture & Air Pockets: Due to the nature of the casting process, some air can become trapped within the concrete finish, causing small holes to form at the surface. These can vary in size, which adds to the natural, custom handmade process and overall unique beauty of the tubs.

Concrete Surface Variation: Each COCOON concrete tub is unique – no two tubs are the same. Keep in mind that there will never be a solid block of the same finish color, due to the variables within this specialized concrete mix. If you are looking to achieve a more smooth surface, there is an option of “Polished Concrete”, which gives the treatment an extra polish to smooth out the surface area.

Textural Flow Lines: The concrete mix is liquid when being poured into the mold of the tub or sink bowl, so textured flow lines can be expected some times. These lines are more visible when manufacturing the Atlantis bathtub, and is considered a part of the unique nature of a custom-made concrete product.

Exposed Fibers: The COCOON baths and basins are manufactured using Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete. In some of the cases, the fibers are visible within the surface of the material. These are not structural defects; the fibers add to the strength of the product to better reinforce it.

Concrete Colors by COCOON:

How-To Guide to Care for your COCOON Concrete Tub:

  • Only use mild non-abrasive cleaners. Do not use scour pads, which will scratch the sealer
  • Avoid products with high levels of PH, such as bleach, nail polish remover, etc.
  • Wipe down after usage; don’t leave moist or wet products directly on tub for long periods of time
  • Direct sunlight can lead to discoloration over time

luxury interior design transcends these assumptions and instead seeks to create elevated, customized living experiences that will last.

One challenge interior designers face is communicating the value of luxury to their clients, or, in other words, helping clients understand the significance of selecting high-quality products, materials, and services for the project.

Why is this a challenge? The word “luxury” can be associated with flashiness, extravagance, and unnecessary spending. However, luxury interior design transcends these assumptions and instead seeks to create elevated, customized living experiences that will last.

Read on to learn how we communicate the difference to our clients.

Connect the Product to the Desired Experiences

Interior designers may find success when connecting the luxury product, material or service to the desired experience.

Let’s Take a Look at an Example

Many of our luxury clients are stressed in their daily lives and are looking for serenity and relaxation in their homes. That is why we present many of our products as providing a spa-like or even a luxury hotel-like experience for our clients. For instance, our free-standing tubs.

The COCOON Atlantis Free-Standing Tub

Installing a bathtub creates the opportunity to elevate a bathroom space and create the calming, spa-like experience the client desires. Additionally, COCOON tubs pair elegance and functionality with a design built to last a lifetime.

The greater we imagine a product will enhance or facilitate a positive experience, the greater value we’ll see in it.

Associate the Luxury Products with Solutions to Your Clients’ Problems

Generally, luxury clients value their time and are looking for ways to spend it more efficiently. This is why we find great success in solution-based selling to our luxury clients.

We like to begin by asking our clients questions such as:

  • “What do you like about your current space?”
  •  “What do you hate about your current space?”
  •  “Does your current X help or hinder you?”
  •  “What about this process frustrates you?”

These questions can lead into “because you said you didn’t like “X”, I thought you’d like Y.” In this statement, it can be easier for the client to understand the value of the luxury item; it is a solution to the needs they have previously stated.

According to Forbes, “Solution-selling is about maintaining an ongoing dialogue and being recognized as an expert with a valued opinion… During a presentation, don’t just do a product demo—focus on the challenges the customer is experiencing… They will perceive you as part of their team when you show interest in their work, listen to their pain points and look to find a solution instead of focusing on the sale.”

An Example

For instance, one concern we may hear from our clients is: “the hardware at our beachfront property constantly shows wear and needs to be replaced.”

What solution do we offer? Some of our luxury products with a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finish.

We may suggest  this COCOON Piet Boon Wall Mount Rain Head that will maintain the same look and feel without showing wear as a result of its durable PVD finish.

Shifting the conversation beyond the topic of price to creating value with your clients leads to deeper, more meaningful engagement.

Frame Your Product and Service as Aligning with the Clients’ Values

Today, many buyers choose luxury products because they may assert their status but because the brand aligns with their values. For instance, clients may pay more for products that are:

  •  Environmentally sustainable
  • Crafted by an artisan rather than machine made
  • Created by companies that treat their employees well
  • Made by companies that give back to the community

For Example…

At Speciality Hardware & Plumbing, we frequently encounter customers who prioritize sustainability. For these clients, we offer solutions such as COCOON concrete tubs.

Why? These concrete tubs are:

  • Resistant to humidity
  • Versatile
  • Able to be paired with a range of accessories and fixtures
  • Long-lasting and incredibly durable
  • Up to 80% lighter and more flexible than traditional concrete tubs
  • Little maintenance, as no wax or oil is needed to seal the tub after usage
  • Heat-resistant
  • Will not crack
  • Built to last a lifetime

According to the COCOON Lab Concrete Material Guide, their concrete finishes are made from a special, natural mixture and hand polished. Each tub has its own unique look, with a visual patina and variation in color.
